About

Software engineer. Tinkerer.

I'm Rhynier Myburgh, a staff software engineer at Cisco. I've been writing software for a living since 1996, and I still spend my evenings building things.

What I've done

  • At Microsoft I designed ADMX, the file format Windows uses for Group Policy Administrative Templates. I'm also a named inventor on a Microsoft patent for Group Policy reporting.
  • I joined Cisco in 2012 to work on Cisco Process Orchestrator, moved into AppDynamics after Cisco bought it, and now work in Cisco's Splunk division.
  • Before that I worked in South Africa. I wrote control software for telecom hardware, and for chemical plants I built a workflow execution engine with neural networks we trained at its core.
  • I studied electrical and electronic engineering at Stellenbosch University.

What I tinker with

I build custom split keyboards running ZMK and QMK, and since about 2023 the only keyboard I type on is a Chocofi I built. I also built a Voron 0 myself, keep a Klipper-tuned Ender 3 Pro running, and I'm learning to design printable parts in Fusion 360. At home I run a small lab with Home Assistant, plus small electronics projects around the house.

Build log

I write up what I try here, in software, hardware and 3D printing. Some of it works.
